THE WRECK OF AN ITALIAN BARQUE

SPECIAL TELEGRAM

Queenstown Friday - The Italian Barque
Celestina from Buenos Ayres laden with 1,000 bags of maize which ran ashore on the rocks at Ballycroneen Bay was visited to-day by Mr. Allen Italian Vice-Consul. From the position of the ill- fated Barque there is very little hope of saving anything. She lies about a mile to westward of the coastguard station of the Ballycroneen Bay on her starboard side on the reef rocks, twisted amid' ships in ten feet of water at low water.

When first sighted by the Coast Guards yesterday she was running on towards the bay and had evidently mistook a point outside for Roche's Point the entrance to Queenstown Harbour. It was thick at the time and the wind was blowing a gale from the south-west. When Captain Schiaffino had discovered his error he endeavored to head the vessel for the westward but having little canvas on she ran on to a reef of rocks and bumped heavily and then ran on to another reef quite adjacent. which penetrated her bottom and the vessel almost filled with water. Captain Schiaffino. fortunately was able to launch the boats by which means the entire crew saved their lives.
