History

HMS Audacious was part of the Second Battle Squadron of the British Grand Fleet on exercises off the north west coast of Ireland.
Audacious struck a mine laid by the German auxiliary mine layer Berlin, resulting in the flooding of several compartments including the engine rooms .

RMS Olympic and HMS Liverpool attemted to tow the ship back to Lough Swilly but the tow lines snapped time and again in heavy seas.The Audacious was abandoned and sank with no loss of life.
